If oil is coming into the air filter, it's usually because oil has gotten into the vent on the top of the valve cover. More might have gotten into it when it was laying on its side. Or, if the oil was just changed, then there might have been too much oil put in and the excess is being blown out. .
The volume of clean and filtered air that mixes with the fuel is determined by the jets in a carburettor. The air filter ensures clean air is passed into the engine by weeding out contaminants in the air sucked into the motorcycle. An array of sensors in fuel injector-based machines decide the mixture ratio (lean or rich) based on throttle.

When oil drips out of an air cleaner assembly, it is usually an indication that the air cleaner element is due to be cleaned, or changed. Why is oil coming out of my air filter on my motorcycle? The most likely source is the crankcase ventilation system which will have a hose running from the crankcase to the airbox.
Most air cooled Harleys will be happy with about 3 1/2 to 3 3/4 quarts of oil in the crankcase instead of 4 quarts. The oil heats up in the summertime and expands outward through the breather. The easiest way to check this theory out is to pull the dipstick when the bike is hot. If it has too much oil in it and is puking out the air cleaner.
A simple way to check is: Take the air cleaner cover off. Take the dipstick out and lay a 3x3 single layer of tissue paper over the opening. Take a common drinking straw and hold it over the smaller hole in the air-box, (the one that sticks out), and give it a puff of air. If it blows the tissue off, you're OK.
